FILM REVIEW: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

8 out of 10
Curious George comes to life

This ones all about the monkeys and is absolutely what makes it adequately enjoyable. From the very first scene we are with them, and although their CG movements in long shots are sometimes a little unnatural, the expressions and details in the close ups are eerily real. Humans eventually enter in the picture too, but really only act to facilitate the monkeys' journey. The plot isn't especially heavy, but the primate focus keeps you fascinated enough to drag you along. It isn't exactly a film that'll crack deep into the chest cavity, but one that still has heart, thanks largely to the motion captured performance of Andy Serkis as the lead monkey Caesar. The other Monkey characters are cool too, all with their own personalities, and when the revolution happens, you side with them, beating your chest in excitement.

A very respectable effort.
