FILM REVIEW: Super 8

7 out of 10

Kids caught in the cross-fire

This was definitely a tribute film. I'm just not sure after seeing it, who was doing the tributing. JJ tributing Spielberg?... Spielberg tributing himself via JJ?... It left me a bit confused. The film's themes and plot screamed Spielberg but its look, style and setup was all JJ. In combination, I'm not sure the merger was the most complimentary. I had the feeling it wanted to be this dark, mysterious, sci-fi thriller but couldn't because the family film had hitched a ride on its back. The sentimental moments, seemed a little more heavy handed than in previous occasions in JJ's films.

I suppose when one is dealing with kids throughout, it comes with the territory. Spielberg still remains the best director of children actors but JJ gets solid performances from his little people. The action and excitement is there or thereabouts, but I was a little disappointed in the payoff of the premise. Perhaps a bit more straightforward than what was suggested in the promotions. Could be something for JJ to watch out for in the future as idea allusion with eventual slightly anti-climactic revelations, are becoming a bit of a habit.
