Is this real? |
Machine Gun Preacher's problem is one that should've been its strength. Hard-hitting source material from a world too real. Given the Hollywood touch, this however comes out contrived. Authenticity is passed over for gloss and polish. It just doesn't quite fit. This is further exasperated at the end where we see real footage of the characters the film is based on. A little somewhat less glamorous you could say than those featured in the 129mins of cinema preceding.
Without investment, it was a bit
Blood Diamondish minus a Di Caprio hash accent to keep you bemused. Some moments were fascinating to watch, like
Butler in his element delivering a evangelical rage of a sermon, but too often scenes fell flat and deserved better. This was pretty much my feeling for the entire film. Something that deserved to be better.
