FILM REVIEW: Moneyball

9 out of 10
Behind the scenes of baseball with Brad
Sports films are almost always entertaining, but usually nothing more. Moneyball, directed by Bennett Miller (Capote), successfully breaks away from this prescription with a fascinating look with a mostly behind-the-scenes recreation of a true story, modern-day changing of a game. What I found especially interesting, were the relationships depicted between the GM (Pitt) and the clubs owner, coach (Seymour-Hoffman), scouts, players and assistant (Jonah Hill). It was a real examination into the conflict between tradition and professionalism, within a sport so prominent in the American culture. Its greatest success is in its theme of courage, not in the physical/mental sense often attributed with sport, but the courage in backing oneself against all the resistors to change with ideas that shake the foundations upon what is previously believed. Only with change can things evolve as the film, both in content and form, proves and shows.
