Having grown up on a farm in the Central King Country, life was tough for Vanessa in her early years. 3am wake-up calls for uddering was followed by 6am dagging and drenching. Bailing hay stacks consumed the rest of the morning before tramping the tussock, plying the pasture for gorse. This would have hardened the best of us, yet Vanessa has a friendly demeanor and is the most down-to-earth person I know. She rejects all things of pomp and material and is one of the few girls I know who never wears makeup (maybe the only one). You can hardly tell either thanks to an upbringing of rich unpolluted country air.
